While wide receiver and cornerback are surely two of the 49ers’ top NFL Draft needs this year, it’s hard to overlook the fact the offensive line is in need of some reinforcements.

Especially over the long term, as recent reports cast some doubt on whether or not veteran left tackle Joe Staley retires this offseason. Even if Staley doesn’t hang up his cleats, finding his long-term replacement has to be on San Francisco’s radar.

The 2020 draft is top-heavy with offensive line talent, and there aren’t a lot of options after the first two rounds.

Two players stick out early in Round 1: Louisville’s Mekhi Becton and Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs. Various big boards swap the two for the best tackle prospect in the draft, although one has to figure the Niners are a bit more enamored with Iowa’s offensive system, having brought aboard quarterback C.J. Beathard and tight end George Kittle in recent drafts.

Wirfs has the plug-and-play ability to start at guard right away, and the 49ers have a question mark at right guard after cutting Mike Person earlier this offseason. With some minimal fine-tuning, Wirfs could then be slotted for tackle duties.

Yet Wirfs could easily be a top-10 selection, too, as there are a handful of line-needy teams picking ahead of San Francisco.

If Wirfs falls, though, it could be hard for the Niners to pass him up.
