No. 2: 49ers Release Wide Receiver Marquise Goodwin

Back during the NFL Scouting Combine, Kyle Shanahan told reporters veteran wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was too good simply to release, and the team would at least explore trading the oft-injured speedster if there wasn’t a surefire spot for him on the roster.

It’s possible the Niners could move Goodwin, of course, and a number of teams could feasibly be interested.

But knowing just how deep the 2020 NFL Draft class is at wide receiver, it still doesn’t seem likely San Francisco would get much of anything in return.

Certainly not before the draft anyway.

That said, it doesn’t appear Goodwin will have a role on the offense if the 49ers do elect to bring aboard a rookie wideout or two on draft day. By letting him go early, the Niners would be allowing the veteran to get a jumpstart on the free-agent process instead of having to wait around until the proverbial post-draft dust settles.

Doing so also benefits the 49ers, who would save just over $3.6 million in cap space with $1.25 million in dead money for 2020.

That cash could be used for the final transaction on this list.
