No. 1: Doesn’t Make It to September

A third and final scenario for Travis Benjamin that has a great possibility of happening as well is he doesn’t make the final 55-man roster, and he is not a 49er by the time the regular season starts.

It is widely considered Deebo Samuel is the No. 1 wide receiver on the depth chart, currently. The No. 2 spot is in question, but many believe a top-notch rookie will be selected 13th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft and will inevitably take that spot alongside Samuel.

Kendrick Bourne, whom the Niners placed a second-round restricted free-agent tender on, also appears favored to be much higher than Benjamin in the pecking order.

Bourne is still on the roster, as are Marquise Goodwin, Richie James and Dante Pettis. Also, receivers Trent Taylor and Jalen Hurd will be returning from 2019 injuries.

Even if one or two of those players are moved, it still makes for a very crowded receivers room.

In the event Benjamin doesn’t stand out in camp or the preseason, there is reason to believe San Francisco could cut him.

And therefore use his roster spot for another position group needing more depth.
