The 49ers need to strongly consider a cornerback in the 2020 NFL Draft, if for no other reason but to find a long-term replacement for the veteran, Richard Sherman, who enters a contract year.

An upgrade over fellow corner Ahkello Witherspoon would probably be nice. And while third-year pro Emmanuel Moseley flashed some promise last season, he’s far from being crowned as a shoo-in starter just yet.

Even so, getting some additional cornerback depth to develop would be nice.

This is where Tulsa’s Reggie Robinson II comes into play. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Robinson fits the mold for what Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh prefers in his Cover 3 scheme for boundary corners. Robinson has long limbs and a relatively lanky frame to thrive here.

And after running an impressive 4.44 40-yard time at the NFL Combine, Robinson helped answer some questions about his straight-line speed.

There are also indications he could be an excellent ballhawking defensive back, particularly in a zone-style scheme San Francisco runs.

Robinson could go earlier than the 49ers’ first pick on day three in Round 5. But if he’s available, don’t be surprised if the Niners make a move here.
