No. 2: 49ers Trade Dante Pettis

It’s one thing to see the fanbase suggest and discuss the idea of trading Dante Pettis. But it’s another to see it listed among the legitimate reports and rumors.

There’s also discussion the Niners could trade another wide receiver, Marquise Goodwin, this offseason. It’s something Kyle Shanahan also discussed at the NFL Combine. But Goodwin, 29 years old, has far more mileage on his body and a notably higher contract than Pettis.

Plus, Goodwin has dealt with a myriad of injuries for much of his career. Pettis has yet to have that kind of reputation.

Matt Barrows suggested there was a possibility the 49ers explored trading Pettis this offseason. But he also noted it seemed like a less-likely scenario, given the Niners would already be punting on their second-round investment after just two seasons.

Niners Nation also reported San Francisco was exploring trades for Pettis, so make of that what you wish.

The key thing to remember, though, is the 49ers won’t be getting anything close in return for such a trade, perhaps no more than a fourth-round pick.

While one can’t rule it out, and a fourth-round pick is clearly worth more than a weekly inactive player, trading Pettis seems nothing more than a remote possibility.

But it’s still a possibility.
