No. 1: Defensive Tackle Ndamukong Suh

By trading away DeForest Buckner, the 49ers created something of a void at defensive tackle.

San Francisco likely uses a rotation to make up for the snaps, but it wouldn’t have been a bad idea to plug in a veteran presence with plenty of proverbial “gas left in the tank.”

More from SF 49ers Free Agency

One player was still-Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

According to reports, the Niners attempted to lure Suh away from the Buccaneers during NFL free agency, yet he inevitably elected to sign a one-year deal worth $8 million. With former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady now in Tampa Bay, perhaps Suh now views his squad as a legitimate playoff contender. Or maybe just staying put would have been a top priority.

Still, the 49ers could have benefited from Suh’s veteran presence, and getting a run-stopping defensive tackle with some modest interior pass-rushing abilities remaining would have been beneficial.

Especially considering the Niners also have plenty of defensive line depth questions in the wake of Buckner’s departure.
