San Francisco 49ers: Round 1 big board for the 2020 NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
Like Jalen Reagor, the 49ers also met with LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson at the NFL Combine.
But while Reagor’s combine performance essentially meant his draft stock stayed stagnant, Jefferson’s efforts most likely shot him well into the middle parts of the first round. After all, the 6-foot-1 receiver ran an impressive 4.43 40-yard dash with an equally impressive 126-inch long jump.
It’s likely Kyle Shanahan would want to use Jefferson as a bigger-bodied slot receiver, but identifying positions in the head coach’s passing game can be a bit foolish. Slot receivers can end up running outside routes, while boundary receivers end up cutting or motioning towards the inside of the formation.
In doing this, Jefferson looks to be an ideal fit. He’s more than capable of eluding coverage, finding his way through seams and into open spaces. Jefferson also has a knack for fighting for contested passes, and the Niners have lacked a true target in this facet since the days of now-retired pass catcher Anquan Boldin.
Jefferson would likely be San Francisco’s top wide receiver on its big board if it wasn’t for the next and final player on this list, Alabama’s Henry Ruggs III.
