49ers NFL Draft plans: 5 second-round picks to target in 2020
By Peter Panacy
If the 49ers try trading down and yet put off their needs for a cornerback, it wouldn’t be shocking to see John Lynch look for a wide receiver in Round 2.
Like Trevon Diggs, Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins could be on the fringes between Rounds 1 and 2. If he does slip into the second round, it won’t be far and the early day-two selections appear to be the most likely outcome where the 6-foot-4, 216-pound Higgins could go.
Speaking of that size, the Niners still lack a promising big-bodied wideout to win those 50-50 catch balls. Yes, second-year pro Jalen Hurd has that stature. But he’s fairly new to the position after transitioning from running back in college, and he’s also working his way back from a back injury suffered last year.
Higgins, meanwhile, has excellent separation and uses his frame to his advantage. While his fairly pedestrian route-running skills likely keep him out of the upper echelon of receiving targets in this year’s draft, there’s little doubting he’d be an excellent weapon in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
