No. 2: EDGE Jadeveon Clowney

Next up on the list of free agents the 49ers should steer clear of is Seattle Seahawks defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney was the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent the beginning of his career with the Houston Texans and was then traded to the Seattle Seahawks last season.

Clowney is an incredible athlete, and while he has struggled with injuries over his career, he has proven himself to be one of the NFL’s elite players. But even though he is certainly one of the best in the NFL at his position, the Niners should not pursue him in free agency.

The reason why is simple. The Niners don’t need him. The Niners already have two elite defensive ends in Nick Bosa and Dee Ford. If you watched any of the 49ers games this past season, you probably noticed their defensive line, and especially their defensive ends, excelled.

So, the Niners don’t need Clowney, especially not at the price he is likely to demand. Clowney is reportedly seeking to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Instead, the Niners should spend their money on their interior defensive line, possibly by re-signing Arik Armstead, as their star defensive ends are inked for the next few seasons.
