49ers 2020 free agency needs: 3 low-cost options at wide receiver
By Peter Panacy
The Green Bay Packers didn’t quite get the production they wanted out of their wide receiver corps in 2019, outside of Davante Adams. As a result, one might think they let Geronimo Allison, a 2016 undrafted free agent, walk this offseason.
Allison might be the epitome of a true low-budget option with good enough upside. Granted, Allison never put up more than 325 receiving yards over his four years in Green Bay with quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing his direction most of the time. But the lack of production will probably keep his asking price in the range of $2 million per season.
There are also a number of attributes which could make Allison attractive enough to San Francisco.
For starters, Allison has size on his side: 6-foot-3 and 202 pounds, and the 49ers could use some bigger-bodied receiving targets moving forward. And while Allison lacks straight-line speed, he did flash moments where good footwork was present. This could be valuable in those short-area situations, such as the red zone, where the Niners again struggled last year.
On top of that, Allison worked under Packers head coach Matt LaFleur last season, and LaFleur’s offense isn’t entirely unlike that of Kyle Shanahan.
The scheme fit could be a bonus, especially if Shanahan wants to find some adequate depth to reinforce the back end of the receiving depth chart.
