Offensive Tackle Shon Coleman

The 49ers could have used veteran swing tackle Shon Coleman during the regular season, especially after losing starting tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey to lengthy injuries.

But Coleman suffered his own season-ending injury during the preseason, which wiped out any 2019 efforts.

Heading into 2020, the Niners have invested efforts into developing other backup tackles, namely Daniel Brunskill and Justin Skule. Skule had his up-and-down moments, which were expected out of a rookie, while Brunskill was an impressive surprise. Brunskill even managed to start seven games, too, suggesting he’ll be part of the team’s long-term plans.

Assuming Staley doesn’t elect to retire this offseason, Brunskill is the likely favorite to be the primary backup tackle in 2020, while Skule is the immediate reserve in case attrition repeats itself again this year.

That leaves no room for Coleman to make an impact with San Francisco.
