No. 5: Benny LeMay, Running Back, Charlotte

You can’t go far without naming the MVP of the Shrine Bowl, and Charlotte running back Benny LeMay was easily the star of the game.

LeMay had 16 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns (including the game-winner) during the East-West encounter.

LeMay had good stats at Charlotte, with his senior year showing the versatility he could bring to an NFL offense. LeMay ran for 1,082 yards and nine touchdowns on 193 carries, and had 19 receptions for 242 yards and another four touchdowns.

LeMay is somewhat short, but thickly built at 5-foot-9 and 218 pounds, and has functional speed for the next level. He can contribute in the passing game, and he’s likely to be a late pick, which is the hallmark of the Shanahan approach to running backs.

Do the 49ers need a running back? It’s hard to tell given the fact that they have so many strong runners already. But with San Francisco needing to save money for cap room, openings will be there for draftees to make their mark as an inexpensive alternative.

The San Francisco 49ers have few immediate needs, but drafting and stashing a player like LeMay for the future may be an option worth considering.
