No. 13: The San Francisco 49ers trade for Jimmy Garoppolo

As an Australian, when a trade happens it almost always comes in the middle of the night when I’m asleep. So when I woke up and checked my phone, there was a notification (then some hours old) the 49ers had traded with the New England Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo.

While opening the notification to learn of the deal, I wondered what San Francisco had given up. I had assumed it was for the 49ers’ first-round draft pick, with maybe a late pick from the Patriots thrown in.

Imagine my shock and pleasant surprise when I read all the Niners surrendered a measly second rounder. That for a potential franchise quarterback? What a steal.

Early returns have been very positive for San Francisco. Garoppolo has had bad games, but he has been able to just keep winning and has the 49ers in place for a deep playoff push in 2019, a mere two years after the trade.

Just as importantly, it provided a sense of direction for the team and a quarterback to build around.

Which they’ve done to an amazing degree.

Can Garoppolo be the third 49ers QB to win a Super Bowl? That’s the remaining question now.
