Trey Adams. 16. player. 818. . Offensive Tackle. Huskies

Pros:

  • Great size for a left tackle
  • Great hands allows him to take control of blocks
  • Can get to the second level easily in run blocking
  • Has the speed to handle speed rushers and the strength to handle power rushers
  • Adept at zone blocking

Cons:

  • Has durability concerns due to injuries in college
  • Not especially athletic, depends purely on technique instead of using athleticism to work in space
  • Plays a little upright, which can affect his leverage

Similar to Trey Smith, Trey Adams is a pure first-round talent who will fall due to durability concerns. As a result, if the 49ers are satisfied with his health, they could make a boom-or-bust pick with this selection.

Adams is a definite first-round talent, as he has the size and ability to be a blindside protector to replace Joe Staley down the line. However, a torn ACL in 2017 and a back injury in 2018 forced him to miss most of those seasons.

Adams is also not technically perfect. His tendency to play a little more upright than he should affects his leverage, which can allow defenders to take advantage.

He also isn’t an elite athlete, so he has to depend on his technique to win battles. This usually works very well, but he has to make sure he’s perfect each time as he doesn’t have the athleticism to recover if beaten.

All that being said, these are relatively minor issues that can be worked on. The real question is if the 49ers believe his injuries are behind him.

Draft range: Second round

Exactly where Adams will be selected will depend on when a team feels comfortable with him, but the need for blindside protectors means the second round seems the most likely spot.
