49ers big board for 2020 NFL Draft: Bowl games edition
Pros:
- Very mobile, can move to meet blocks as well as play as a pulling guard
- Strong blocker in both running and passing plays
- Plays very disciplined, rarely flagged or badly beaten
- Has good punch, can really get into a defender and take the initiative
- Strong enough physically and mentally to start Week 1
Cons:
- Can sometimes have trouble pushing defenders back on run plays
- While strong enough, can stand to add more strength
- Can sometimes be caught reaching for defenders
A prospect who looks to be a safe and solid pick, Shane Lemieux would appeal to the 49ers who desperately need to add more depth to their interior offensive line.
Lemieux is a nice blend of mobility and strength. While he’s more effective in running situations, he’s no slouch in pass protection, either. He has a nice, disciplined approach to his play and is at least competent in all areas.
Where he looks really good is his punch. When he takes the initiative on blocks he has a real knack of getting into a defender and taking them out of plays. He’s solid in pass protection, if not prolific.
Lemieux could stand to improve his power base in the NFL. While not weak, he doesn’t have trouble sometimes pushing players around and will only be facing stronger opponents in the pros.
Luckily, he would be in an ideal situation to do this in San Francisco. The 49ers have starters already penciled in at both guard spots, so they can develop Lemieux and make him stronger.
Draft range: First/second round
Lemieux has a chance of falling into the second round, unlike some others below him on the big board, but his ability to fill a nice need for a depleted 49ers offensive line as initial depth before becoming a starter brings him up.
It isn’t a sexy pick, but Lemieux is a safe pick who fits in the Niners’ projected draft range.
