Lesson No. 2: Sacks Won’t Come Easy

Trying to take Lamar Jackson down behind the line of scrimmage isn’t impossible, but it’s not easy.

Here on a bobbled snap against the Rams, Jackson managed to recover the ball make a quick read, and then decide to take off for a big first down near the goal line.

In order to bring Jackson down, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh will have to mix things up and show different looks, as noted by Locked On 49ers host, Brian Peacock.

Late in the first quarter, the Rams set the edge with Samson Ebukan and covered up the back end, which forced Jackson into a sack.

When running man coverage, the 49ers are going to have to stay home. Jackson isn’t just a running back with an arm, he does a great job of attacking the line of scrimmage and forcing defenders to commit to him. The minute a linebacker or defensive back leaves his assigned man, Jackson can pull up and zip the ball into the uncovered receivers for a big gain.

San Francisco needs to figure out a way to contain this, and the Rams might have revealed one of the methods how.
