2019 NFL trade deadline: 3 moves 49ers can make for added depth
No. 3: Make room on the 49ers roster by moving C.J. Beathard
Unfortunately when it comes to trading players, to get the guy you want, you need to give one (or more) up.
The 49ers have a problem. A good problem, however. They have three quarterbacks and four running backs on their roster. If John Lynch wants to upgrade the depth on the roster, he’ll have to trade some depth.
With the recent injury to fullback Kyle Juszczyk, it keeps running back Jeff Wilson Jr on the active roster. Wilson is a Swiss Army knife in the backfield. He can punch the ball in at the goal line, he can fill in at the fullback spot and has the ability to catch the ball whenever he’s asked.

So who’s left to possibly send away? Quarterback C.J. Beathard.
It’s already a rarity for an NFL team to carry three quarterbacks, and with Bethard being a weekly inactive, it might be time for a change.
Now please understand, this isn’t a knock on Beathard at all. He filled in admirably last season with Nick Mullens when Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. But Mullens just caught on to the system and the game much easier. The NFL is a cruel business, though it’s just that: a business.
There are a number of teams who will be, if not already, looking for a new QB. Do the Miami Dolphins want to continue their season and future with Ryan Fitzpatrick? Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to move on from Jameis Winston? There’s an interesting situation happening in Kansas City, too, with the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes being injured for the next few weeks.
Beathard has a record of 1-9 with 12 touchdowns and almost 2,700 passing yards in his young career. It’ll be beneficial for him to get a fresh start with a new team. He’s got a high football IQ and a knack for running the ball. With a change of scenery for him and an open roster spot for the 49ers, both parties can succeed this year and in the future.
Even if it means the Niners won’t get much of anything in return for him.
There’s a solid chance moves will be made before the NFL trade deadline, which hits on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. ET. Finally, these are moves to make this team into a contender for the first time in what feels like forever.
