Analyzing 49ers safety group post 53-man cut
No. 1: Jaquiski Tartt
Jaquiski Tartt is in effect, the 49ers’ only true strong safety, with the remainder of the group capable of playing at multiple positions.
Tartt has seen limited game time during the past two seasons due to injury. 2018 saw him sit out a total of eight games and land on season ending injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
Similarly to Jimmie Ward, when he’s healthy, Tartt has the ability to be a difference maker in the secondary. From just his eight games, Tartt racked up a total of 42 combined tackles, including four for a loss. He also had two passes defended and the 49ers second interception for the year. While 2017 saw him with a combined 54 tackles from nine games.
49ers management is placing a lot of hope and expectations into Tartt remaining healthy for 2019.
With his ability to be effective against the run, man and zone coverage, an injury will drastically effect the Niners’ ability to cover the backfield.
