Practice Squad Candidate: Shawn Poindexter

With a good deal of competent depth at the position poised to make the 53-man roster, the 49ers may not elect to keep multiple wideouts on the practice squad this season.

But of the 10 eligible players selected to this developmental group, undrafted rookie wide receiver Shawn Poindexter could easily find himself in the fray.

If he slips through waivers, of course.

Poindexter boasts a notable trait nearly every other San Francisco wide receiver lacks: size. At 6-foot-5, the former Arizona standout is already the tallest wideout on the team’s 90-man offseason roster, making him a unique commodity amid a group of pass catchers mostly on the smaller side of things.

Granted, Kyle Shanahan has never based his offense off sheer size and physicality. Route running and speed are more important attributes here, and Poindexter isn’t the most polished in either area.

Considering the Niners finished dead last in red-zone touchdown efficiency last year, however, it might be wise to give Poindexter an added look with some long-term hopes once the regular season rolls around.

Poindexter did, after all, make Niner Noise’s predictive piece for the 2019 practice squad.
