No. 2: Tight End Tyree Mayfield

Like running back, the 49ers have plenty of options at tight end heading into 2019. And there are likely to be at least one or two players at this position jettisoned into the open market when roster cuts are made.

There’s no doubt about the 2018 Pro Bowler, George Kittle. San Francisco’s sixth-round pick, Kaden Smith, is probably safe, too, while second-year pro Ross Dwelley is making a name for himself during training camp.

One name to watch, though, is undrafted rookie Tyree Mayfield out of Wyoming.

Small-school products are always interesting. They certainly don’t get the hype many other top college prospects receive, but there are certainly many proverbially “hidden gems” out there.

Mayfield could be one such player.

Sure, his 503 receiving yards over four collegiate seasons don’t inspire much confidence. But Kittle’s college numbers weren’t particularly great either.

What’s vital to know is Mayfield also showcased great skill on special teams in college — always important for depth players, and he managed to flash some playmaking ability during rookie minicamp earlier this spring.
