No. 1: Defensive Back K’Waun Williams

K’Waun Williams is a fifth-year defensive back entering his third year with the 49ers. Williams was a career backup, previously, but at times has proved he can be a valuable role player.

Last season he was able to start 11 games for the 49ers’ depleted secondary.

He mainly comes on the field in the Niners nickel package, which is now becoming the normal defense as offenses typically go three wide. He has been making plays through the first week of camp. In Saturday’s 11-on-11 drill he was even able to secure a would-be sack.

The secondary was one of the 49ers’ glaring weaknesses a season ago besides All-Pro Richard Sherman. The team seems to have addressed the issue through free agency. However, newly acquired cornerback Jason Verrett has had injury concerns throughout his career.

If the 49ers are looking to make a playoff run, Williams could be another valuable player who must step up when he is called upon.
