49ers 2019 training camp: 5 players who are impressing early

No. 5: Defensive End Solomon Thomas
2019 is going to be a make-or-break year for the 49ers’ top pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, defensive end Solomon Thomas. And in light of the tragedy both he and his family endured a year ago, losing his sister to suicide, Thomas’ road back to an impact level is certainly a good storyline to get behind this season.
After two underwhelming years at the pro level, the Niners are needing Thomas to look like the No. 3 overall drafted prospect.
Early on in training camp, it sure seemed as if this was the case. The Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman explained:
"Thomas looked particularly spry and activated. He cut weight and got stronger, and seems motivated to have a big year after struggling on and off the field last season. Thomas’ best work was as a pass rusher inside, but look for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to continue moving the former No. 3 pick all over the line. Thomas bouncing back from his one-sack second season would be a very welcomed development and could take the already talented defensive line to another level."
All those changes to San Francisco’s defensive front this offseason figure to bolster Thomas’ presence. And if he winds up capitalizing on an increased role, playing off his upgraded supporting cast, there’s a strong chance he winds up living up to that lofty draft stock.
At the very least, he’ll improve an already deep defensive line and will certainly be using his sister’s memory for motivation.
