No. 5: Tight End Tyree Mayfield

The 49ers already appear to have a hefty competition at tight end this season. George Kittle is the bona fide stud, and rookie Kaden Smith out of Stanford is an intriguing prospect in the making.

There might be a bit of a bout between free-agent pickup Levine Toilolo and San Francisco’s No. 2 tight end last year, Garrett Celek. But Celek remains in the concussion protocol stemming from a head injury suffered late last year. And he might be in jeopardy of not making the 53-man roster anyway.

A dark-horse player to watch in this competition, though, is 2019 undrafted rookie Tyree Mayfield out of Wyoming.

Mayfield, 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, has the small-school pedigree which can make him easily fly under the radar. The fact he’s an UDFA only solidifies this, too.

Adding to Mayfield’s potential ascent is the fact he also doubled on special teams at the college level, which only increases his value to the Niners.

He still has a long way to go to even be considered for the regular-season roster. But Mayfield is still someone worth keeping an eye on this August.
