San Francisco 49ers: The all-time team in franchise history
By Peter Panacy
Quarterback
Joe Montana
OK, so there may be some continued controversy between 49ers quarterbacking greats Joe Montana and Steve Young.
And that’s fine. It shows just how great these two San Francisco signal-callers truly were. And, just like Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, Montana and Young are the faces of 49ers greatness.
Montana would make his debut after being drafted in 1979 but would come into his own in 1981, leading to the 49ers’ first Super Bowl Championship. By the time Montana left San Francisco en route to a two-year tenure in Kansas City with the Chiefs, he had won three more Super Bowls, two NFL MVP awards, three Super Bowl MVPs and set a number of records.
He still holds the franchise record with 35,124 passing yards and 244 touchdowns.
Young backs Montana up on the all-time list. But he could easily be named a starter based on what he did at the position in Montana’s shadow.
