Quarterback

Lock: Jimmy Garoppolo

Strong Bubble: Nick Mullens

Weak Bubble: C.J. Beathard

Long Shot: Wilton Speight

Again, another obvious atop the list. Things only get interesting after Jimmy G.

Kyle Shanahan is repeatedly on record saying backup quarterbacks Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard will have an equal shot to be No. 2 on the depth chart.

That’s fine. But as our friend Al Sacco over at KNBR pointed out, the numbers are almost entirely in favor of Mullens. Beathard, the 49ers’ third-round NFL Draft pick from 2017, seemed to regress even further before a minor injury resulted in Mullens taking his place under center to close out 2018.

Both Beathard and Mullens have had their share of up-and-down moments during OTAs and minicamp. Training camp, where there will be an actual pass rush, should go a long way in determining the outcome of this provocative position battle.

It would be something of a shock if Shanahan elects to keep three quarterbacks on his 53-man roster this season, meaning one of those two is certainly in danger of losing his spot with the 49ers in 2019.
