49ers’ Additions

After catching passes from backup quarterbacks for much of last season, Kittle should benefit from the return of 49ers starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo in 2019. However, Kittle will be forced to split Garoppolo’s targets with a number of new receivers added to the roster over the offseason.

Veteran wideout Jordan Matthews and rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd add some much-needed size to the Niners’ wide receiving corps, and what rookie wideout Deebo Samuel lacks in height, he makes up with his toughness and ability to run after the catch. San Francisco also used a sixth-round pick on big-bodied tight end Kaden Smith.

Garoppolo’s favorite receivers Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor return from lost 2018 seasons, and second-year wideout Dante Pettis is projected to begin 2019 in a starting role. WR Kendrick Bourne is also back, and the addition of TE Levine Toilolo gives the Niners another viable veteran passing target.

I caught up with FanSided’s fantasy football guru Kevin Scott for his take on how the 49ers’ receiving options will affect Kittle’s fantasy production in 2019:

“Kittle enjoyed a phenomenal season in 2018 for a few reasons. Most importantly, he is uber-talented. His route running, hands and knowledge of the pro game caught up to his freakish athletic talent.

But one thing to keep in mind for the upcoming season is that the 49ers will have several more viable weapons, including Pettis with a year under his belt, a healthy stable of running backs who can all catch the short routes and rookies Samuel and Hurd who should both be involved early.

With an experienced quarterback in Garoppolo and a great offensive system, I expect the ball to be spread around quite a bit to keep defenses guessing. So while Kittle should still be a top-5 fantasy tight end based on talent and a good offensive situation, don’t expect him to break the yardage record again.” – Kevin Scott
