The New York Jets are going to be an interesting team to watch in 2019, especially with top free-agent pickups in running back Le’Veon Bell and linebacker C.J. Mosley. Tack on a full year’s development from quarterback Sam Darnold, and one can hope for the Jets being the pinnacle team in New York this season.
Not like that’s saying much right now, though.
Another positive note, however, is the Jets landing Alabama’s Quinnen Williams at No. 3 overall. It wasn’t too hard to find big boards out there ranking Williams this year’s top NFL Draft prospect. So, getting him at the third overall pick has to be viewed as quite the steal.
The Jets are also taking a flier on Florida’s Jachai Polite, whose NFL Scouting Combine disaster dropped him from a surefire first rounder all the way into Round 3.
Here’s the thing: When Polite is on, he’s a darned good player. That’s what New York is banking on for its questionable pass rush this season.
The good news for New York is head coach Adam Gase inherits a team that looks like it has an understandable plan for 2019, which is about as good a situation as it gets in this context.
New York climbs modestly in our NFL power rankings after those two notable draft selections.
