49ers “Strongly Considering” Quinnen Williams at No. 2

If one had to guess, the 49ers’ NFL Draft big board would look something like the following:

  1. EDGE Nick Bosa, Ohio State
  2. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, Alabama
  3. EDGE/SAM linebacker Josh Allen, Kentucky

With the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, the Niners are guaranteed to have a shot at two of those three players. And if the Cardinals end up going with Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray after all (more on that in a second), many an analyst and pundit feel as if Bosa would be San Francisco’s top choice.

Not so fast, though.

According to a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Williams is in hot contention for the 49ers’ top pick.

True, adding Williams would create a bit of a logjam among the already-deep crop of interior defensive linemen. Yet Maiocco explained how a Williams selection would make sense:

"And, yes, just because the team has selected Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas in the first rounds of drafts the past five years, Williams still is considered a legitimate option."

It’s still possible San Francisco prefers Bosa over Williams, merely stating these kinds of things in case Bosa, not Murray, winds up going No. 1 overall.

But by the looks of it, the Niners may wind up preferring Williams over Bosa anyway.

Speaking of Murray and the Cardinals…
