No. 3: The Dolphins Want to Add a Quarterback Early

Speaking of potential trade partners for the 49ers, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly interested in adding a quarterback early in the NFL Draft after moving on from Ryan Tannehill earlier this offseason.

At least according to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, who reported:

"The Miami Dolphins hope to draft a quarterback in the NFL Draft, which runs April 25 to 27. Sources says the team, which has been doing much work on draft-eligible quarterbacks, plans to add at least one before going to training camp in July. But if there’s no question the team will be adding at least one more quarterback this offseason, the big question is whether that player will come via a premium draft pick — such as in the first round — which would instantly put expectations on that player to eventually be Miami’s starter."

Salguero admitted there’s no definitive answer whether or not the Dolphins will use a high pick on a QB, although there’s plenty of interest in top prospects.

Currently, Miami is slated to pick at No. 13 overall. With eight picks in this year’s draft, the Dolphins would likely have to dip into next year’s draft stock to make a move up with the Niners for the second overall pick.

In doing so, however, the team could leapfrog other potential quarterback-needy teams, such as the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals. And Miami could find its replacement for a very overweight stopgap veteran, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Meanwhile, San Francisco could still have an excellent shot at a top-tier defender at the Dolphins’ spot.
