Stock down: Josh Allen, EDGE/Linebacker, Kentucky

It’s almost unfair to put Kentucky EDGE Josh Allen here — a great prospect who will almost certainly go in the top five picks, but this is all relative and there is a good reason given he’s a popular 49ers mock.

It boils down to this: The Niners don’t like him very much. At least compared to the top duo of Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa and Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, and they aren’t alone.

San Francisco is reportedly exceptionally high on Williams and consider him the best player, and Bosa is slightly behind but fills a bigger need, and the front office is effectively split on who to take.

Allen, while considered a fine prospect by the 49ers, is not considered the same blue-chip player. According to Walter Football, no team with a top pick disagrees, either. Allen is simply behind these players.

"In speaking to multiple sources of teams picking in the top-four picks, they were not all that excited about Allen. They liked him as a prospect, but did not have him as highly graded as Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams or Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa. These sources felt Allen would be a more appropriate value if their teams traded down. They felt that Allen was not the same caliber of player as Williams or Bosa, and that Allen might slip a little lower than expected in the 2019 NFL Draft."

Allen is a definite trade-down target. But if the 49ers stay put, you’ll almost definitely be hearing Bosa or Williams.

Sorry, Allen fans.
