Pick No. 6 to 10: Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State

There is not a single defensive player who did more to improve NFL Draft stock than Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat. And if it weren’t for disciplinary problems when he was at Michigan State, he would be the best EDGE prospect outside of Bosa.

We’ve talked before about how Sweat would be a desirable prospect if the 49ers did decide to trade down, and that remains the case. Sweat would make a formidable duo with new 49er EDGE Dee Ford and be the team’s newest piece to the defensive puzzle.

The key to this puzzle is the minor heart concern that the NFL Scouting Combine uncovered. Just as a refresher, Sweat had a previously unknown heart condition show up on his physical.

The good news for Sweat is this is not considered to be as serious as what happened to Raiders defensive tackle Maurice Hurst the previous year. Hurst was a potential first-round selection before falling to the last day of the draft.

Teams always need pass-rushers, and the Niners would not see much of a drop off in talent if they trade down and take Sweat.

They could also consider

There’s an outside chance Allen could fall to here. Otherwise Devin White, the linebacker from LSU may be the best prospect in the draft, as well as finishing off the brand new 49ers linebacker corps.
