Joe Staley as Brienne of Tarth and Mike McGlinchey as Podrick

Ah, yes. The master and the pupil. The teacher and the understudy.

For whatever the reasons, Game of Thrones‘ Brienne of Tarth ended up having to take a young, green and inexperienced Podrick Payne under her wing, trying desperately to teach him the art of being a proper swordsman.

Gendry seemed to get it, after a while. But it was impossible to think how much of a rookie he looked like during their elongated time together. Meanwhile, Brienne’s seemingly flawless sword-wielding abilities looked effortless, as she was able to topple and defeat countless knights and fighters many thought were ranked higher than her.

Sounds a lot like veteran left tackle Joe Staley and his understudy, 2018 rookie Mike McGlinchey, doesn’t it?

Staley has taken McGlinchey under his wing, referring to his eventual offensive line replacement as a “little brother.” Brienne didn’t exactly warm up to Gendry right away, but GoT fans didn’t take long to see she developed a bit of a soft spot for the green-faced hopeful over time.

If only Brienne and Gendry engaged in a fun karaoke rendition of the Backstreet Boys in Season 8. That would make this comparison perfect.
