No. 1: Offensive Guard Joshua Garnett

If there’s one player who seems to perennially be in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s proverbial “dog house,” it’s former first-round offensive guard Joshua Garnett.

Garnett, after being selected back in 2016, missed all of 2017 with a knee injury and was banged up through training camp the following year, eventually losing out on the starting right guard spot to the versatile Mike Person — a hand-picked Shanahan favorite.

Re-signing Person earlier this offseason helps maintain stability along San Francisco’s offensive line, which is good. Although there are injury concerns with fellow interior O-linemen Laken Tomlinson and Weston Richburg heading into training camp. Both are dealing with knee injuries and could be less than 100 percent by the time camp rolls around.

That’s good news for Garnett, who still has to overcome the mantra of him not being a fit in Shanahan’s zone-style blocking scheme.

Despite this, Garnett likely won’t be given a lot of chances to prove himself between now and the regular season, meaning his hold on a roster spot is in peril if both Tomlinson and Richburg are fully healthy.

It’s looking like Garnett, still on his rookie contract, is heading towards offseason programs on the weaker side of the bubble.
