San Francisco 49ers: Post-free agency 2019 NFL Draft mock
By Peter Panacy
Jordan Matthews should help with the 49ers’ red-zone woes, which ranked worst in the NFL a year ago. He’s a big-bodied target, who is coming off two less-than-productive seasons with the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.
That said, San Francisco brought him aboard on only a one-year deal. And while a solid 2019 campaign could prompt an extension, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Niners reinforce this underperforming wide receiver group through the NFL Draft.
Especially when no 49ers wideout reached 500 receiving yards a year ago.
Size and speed should be the primary focus, and that’s what Notre Dame’s Miles Boykin has. At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Boykin is one of the biggest receivers in this year’s draft class. But that doesn’t necessarily cut into his speed, which was at 4.42 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Boykin’s route tree is pretty limited, though, and NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein suggested he’d be a best fit in an offense that uses a lot of play-action passes to take advantage of Boykin’s mismatch potential.
That’s what the 49ers do under Kyle Shanahan.
Boykin has a very promising upside, just needing some fine tuning to take advantage of the sheer abilities and hone a would-be promising skill set.
