Niner Noise’s post-2019 NFL Combine 49ers roundtable
No. 6: Kyler Murray to the Cardinals at No. 1. Is it happening, or is it a brilliant smokescreen?
Tim Miller
The Cardinals have the No. 1 pick. What would they need a smokescreen for? Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is on record saying he would take Murray No. 1 overall if he had the chance.
I take him at his word. Murray will be No. 1.

I think Murray will go No. 1 overall, but I don’t know to whom. If the Cards trade quarterback Josh Rosen for a third rounder, then they essentially gave up a first and a fifth to select him (like if it was a trade).
By that measure, this choice completely works and actually is a steal compared to other high QBs.

It may just be a smoke screen, but I think the Cardinals are seriously looking into taking Murray with the No. 1 overall pick. Whether they can find a suitor for Rosen will likely help determine their choice.

If it’s a smokescreen, it doesn’t seem too brilliant. The Cardinals have little to gain other than drumming up possible interest in a trade for that top pick, which teams have accounted for already.
But it does help the 49ers, of course, especially if there’s going to be a perceived run for quarterbacks within the first five picks or so. A lot of insiders’ mock drafts have Murray going No. 1, however, so let’s conclude that being the case.

It seems the two teams most keen on Murray are the Cardinals and the Raiders, two teams seemingly set at quarterback. I was convinced that Arizona was definitely taking him, but I can’t help but wonder if Arizona is trying to get the No. 4 pick, plus another of the first rounders from Oakland, for the right to draft Murray.
Right now, my gut says Arizona will take him at No. 1 and leave the 49ers to pick between Bosa and Williams.
