49ers Interested in Bringing Aboard Linebacker Kwon Alexander, Others?

EDITOR’s UPDATE: The 49ers are signing linebacker Kwon Alexander to a four-year, $54 million deal, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

While not as touted as the Niners’ needs at edge rusher, safety or wide receiver, linebacker is certainly a position San Francisco would like to upgrade this offseason. Outside of second-year pro Fred Warner, the 49ers don’t exactly have a lot of shoo-in options at the spot.

The Tampa Bay Times‘ Rick Stroud reported Monday morning the Niners are interested in Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander, who was a Pro Bowler back in 2017. He did, however, tear an ACL nearly halfway through 2018, so that should affect his price tag to a point.

Alexander, 6-foot-1 and 227 pounds, spent four seasons in Tampa Bay but is only 24 years old. With Baltimore Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley likely garnering the most attention at the position, Alexander would like be a fallback option, should that be the route San Francisco takes in free agency.

Alexander would likely occupy the weak-side (WILL) spot in the Niners defense, if signed.

Additionally, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported it’s the team’s intention to land a starting-caliber linebacker through NFL free agency. In addition to Alexander, the Niners may be interested in Mosley and the Minnesota Vikings’ Anthony Barr.
