San Francisco 49ers: Top 10 Super Bowl moments in franchise history
No. 1: The 49ers’ goal-line stand in Super Bowl XVI
After securing the rights to appearing in Super Bowl XVI in their NFC Championship game win over the Cowboys, the 49ers still had to defeat a stout Bengals squad in what proved to be a close game despite San Francisco taking a big lead early.
Up 20-7 in the third quarter, the Niners defense was on it’s heels at their own 3-yard line. The Bengals would take four shots at the end zone and come up short on each.
A combination of poor offensive execution and outstanding plays by 49ers linebackers Jack Reynolds and Dan Bunz paved the way to the team’s first championship.
If 49ers lore includes “The Catch,” “The Drive,” “The Catch” versions two and three, it also has to include this epic goal-line stand.
