UDFA: Running Back Jeff Wilson

Before you get all upset telling me how there were other undrafted free agents, let me explain. Out of all those players, running back Jeff Wilson was the only one who made a large enough impact to be added here. Those players all get an N/A as their grade.

Wilson, on the other hand, was given the keys to the 49ers run game when Matt Breida’s ankle situation took a turn for the worse. Much like Richie James from the last slide, Wilson’s season was both up and down.

In 78 touches, Wilson managed 364 yards, good for a 4.7 yards-per-carry average. That average is supplemented by the passing game, because on the ground, Wilson had only a 4.0 YPC.

The main issue with Wilson was his fumbling. He coughed up the rock three times, causing him to be benched for a short period of time.

The stats paint a very grim picture about Wilson’s impact. But, he was able to eat up carries for a team that lost its top three running backs in the year. He grew as year went on, and he was a tough physical runner.

All that said, the stats don’t lie.

Grade: D

Now, if I had graded including draft position as a qualifier, these grades would be very different. Any production from a late round pick is good. But this way, people can just focus on seeing a football player, not a former pick.
