The $64 question is when will the New England Patriots decide to find the heir apparent for future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see someone grabbed in this year’s NFL Draft. But it’s foolish to think head coach Bill Belichick would reach for a lesser-tier QB this early, especially when he has some pending question marks with his defensive front. Defenders Trey Flowers, Danny Shelton and Malcolm Brown could all hit the free-agent market, and it’s going to be tough for New England to re-sign all three.

There are some weaknesses at the second and third levels of Belichick’s defense, too, although finding a solid pass-rusher up front would be smart. So the Pats stay local, grabbing Boston College EDGE Zach Allen, who has risen up draft boards nicely the past couple of weeks.

He might not be the prolific sack specialist. But he’s constantly in the backfield, picking up tackles for a loss with ease the past two seasons.
