San Francisco 49ers: Grading the 2018 NFL Draft class halfway through the season
By Peter Panacy
Enticed by his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame and his blazing 4.32 40-yard dash time at his 2018 pro day, the 49ers elected to take a shot at Southern Mississippi safety Tarvarius Moore with the hopes of transitioning him to boundary cornerback in coordinator Robert Saleh’s Cover 3 defensive system.
It’s a work in progress, yes. But the issue is Moore’s transition from safety to cornerback — a position he never played before — has moved along slower than most would have hoped. Despite a massive shortage at the position, Moore has seen just 28 defensive snaps. Almost all of his work this season has come on special teams.
On the positive side, though, he’s been targeted just once this season and hasn’t allowed a catch. So there’s that to consider.
Still, a third-round pick is something San Francisco would have liked to get more of a return on by this point in the season.
So, with the second half of the year underway, one might expect the Niners to try Moore out at cornerback a bit more frequently.
They should. There’s no harm in seeing what he can offer.
