Week 10 vs. New York Giants

The Niners get the benefit of playing yet another one-win team, the New York Giants, in Week 10 on Monday Night Football.

At 1-7, the Giants are an absolute mess of a franchise. Quarterback Eli Manning has been criticized for his lackluster play, including former players Lawrence Taylor and Victor Cruz. Whether or not Manning is benched could have some sway in deciding who wins. But it’s pretty clear the Niners have a strong edge here.

Yes, New York is coming off its bye week. But having played on Thursday night the week prior and getting the added day for Monday night on Week 10, the 49ers have their own mini bye week too.

And San Francisco doesn’t have to travel across the coast.

Why the 49ers Win

Let’s assume Nick Mullens starts. There’s really no reason why he wouldn’t. The Giants are allowing an average of 6.9 yards per pass, which ranks 25th in the league. Like the Raiders, the Giants have zero pass rush — just 10 sacks on the year, compared to Oakland’s seven.

So Mullens should be pretty comfortable in the pocket, finding his receiving targets and having little trouble working under pressure.

Meanwhile, New York’s offensive line has been abysmal and ranks 25th in pass protection and dead last in run blocking, according to Football Outsiders. San Francisco had a field day against a better Raiders O-line, registering eight sacks, so this should be an even better opportunity.

Why the 49ers Lose

Giants running back Saquon Barkley. He’s New York’s best offensive weapon, hands down.

Despite New York’s O-line woes, Barkley is still averaging 4.7 yards per carry. While it wasn’t an issue against the Raiders, the 49ers have struggled with missed tackles, particularly against talented running backs, of which Barkley is.

If he has a big day, the Niners are in trouble.

Still, the Giants have scored more than 20 points just twice this season, even with Barkley playing well.

Prediction: 49ers 27, Giants 17
