No. 5: Center Weston Richburg

Coming in at No. 5 on this list of the worst Niners players through seven weeks is veteran center Weston Richburg.

Overall this season, the 49ers offensive line has performed pretty well, particularly in run blocking. Richburg has been OK here, but the past few weeks have been abysmal insofar as his pass protection. According to Pro Football Focus, Richburg allowed two sacks to the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald in San Francisco’s 39-10 loss in Week 7. The week before against the Green Bay Packers, Richburg surrendered six quarterback pressures.

PFF is also ranking him 28th out of 36 qualifying centers.

San Francisco dished out a massive five-year, $47.5 million contract this offseason, which makes him the third highest-paid center in the league this season. And considering how much reliance Kyle Shanahan’s O-line blocking scheme places on its center, Richburg’s underperformance is problematic, putting it lightly.

Richburg’s 54.6 overall PFF mark on the season is also the lowest of all Niners starters up front.

Considering the massive investment the team made on him, Richburg can’t be left off the list of worst players after seven weeks.
