No. 2: Getting the 49ers Offensive Line Back to Strength

Perhaps a key reason why the Niners struggled so much with the rushing attack in Week 1 was the lack of up-front prowess from the offensive line.

In fairness to San Francisco, this group suffered a number of key injuries, namely to right guards Mike Person and Joshua Garnett, who both exited with foot injuries. Those setbacks forced the 49ers to bump right tackle Mike McGlinchey in at guard and required a less-than-effective Garry Gilliam to take over McGlinchey’s prior spot.

Needless to say, it didn’t go well.

Health will be a major factor for the Niners in this contest. Garnett and Person are both listed as questionable for Week 2, meaning the 49ers may have to continue some shuffling between now and game time. And that might include starting the undrafted rookie, Najee Toran, who was promoted off the practice squad earlier this week.

On the positive side, however, the Lions may be without their top pass-rusher, Ezekiel Ansah, who is also questionable with a shoulder injury.

Detroit managed two sacks in its Week 1 loss, but having a somewhat-healthy O-line is still crucial for San Francisco’s chances.
