No. 3: Cornerback Richard Sherman

On the stat sheet, veteran cornerback Richard Sherman‘s 2018 preseason debut might not look overly impressive.

But therein lies the point — the Colts didn’t target the three-time first-team All-Pro much at all during the game despite him coming off a 2017 Achilles tear and a hamstring injury in training camp.

Sherman’s stat line looked pretty basic. He registered a tackle and one pass breakup, which can be seen in his film review below:

“Overall, I felt pretty good,” Sherman told reporters after the game. “Better than expected. … For the most part, I thought I covered pretty well.”

Sherman standing out during the game is important, as the 49ers have some notable question marks about their secondary depth. While Sherman was out over the first two games of the preseason with that hamstring injury, the Niners were forced to start backup corner Jimmie Ward in his place.

That didn’t go so well, and Ward exited this contest with a quad injury.

Seeing Sherman both healthy and contributing in a positive way is a massive bit of good news for San Francisco’s defense.
