Stock down: C.J. Beathard

If the quarterback controversy is about your backup quarterbacks, is it still a quarterback controversy?

Likely, C.J. Beathard would be saying yes.

The reality is hard but clear. Beathard has been thoroughly outplayed by Mullens in these two games.

While Beathard does have harder opponents to face, Mullens has still earned the right to have a crack at his backup job.

To make it worse, reports have popped up of a foot sprain for Beathard despite no reports of an injury after the game.

If Beathard is limited or ruled out of the 49ers’ third preseason contest against the Indianapolis Colts, Mullens will have that chance to face tougher opponents.

It’s a very important two weeks coming up.
