Nose Tackle D.J. Jones

The 49ers didn’t get much production out of rookie defensive tackle Jullian Taylor, who saw a lot of time against Dallas in the wake of veteran DT Arik Armstead (hamstring).

Still, the Niners’ defensive line depth showcased itself on Saturday night again. Only this time, it was nose tackle D.J. Jones.

Jones, San Francisco’s sixth-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, managed three tackles and was a run-stopping force throughout most of the game in Houston. But that doesn’t tell the entire story. On one particular play, and while being occupied with a block, Jones managed to punch the ball out of the grasps of Texans running back Lavon Coleman, resulting in a fumble the 49ers managed to recover — one of two Niners turnovers on the night.

Additionally, 49ers color commentator Tim Ryan sang Jones’ praises throughout the night — a possible indication of the team’s plans for the second-year pro, if you’re reading between the lines.

Ahead of Jones on the depth chart, the Niners have veteran nose tackle Earl Mitchell, who’ll likely start in 2018. But Mitchell, whose hefty contractual obligations this season likely prevent a roster cut, will turn 31 years old this September.

Don’t be surprised if Jones winds up starting between now and Week 17.
