The 49ers stockpiled a number of defensive backs in the 2018 NFL Draft, namely to provide both depth and long-term replacement options for veterans like Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams.

Things are a little more dicey at the back end, however, where veteran defensive back Jimmie Ward is the only real backup to presumed 2018 starters Jaquiski Tartt and Adrian Colbert. Ward, who is playing on his fifth-year option this season, most likely won’t be back with the team in 2019. And the rookie, Marcell Harris, missed all of last year while recovering from an Achilles injury.

At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Miami’s Jaquon Johnson is too undersized to play boundary cornerback. As a safety, though, he’s a natural fit.

What stands out about Johnson is his breakout junior campaign, where he recorded 54 tackles and registered a collegiate career-high four interceptions and four passes defended. San Francisco hasn’t had a true ballhawking defensive back for some time now, and Johnson has flashed hints at being able to do so.
