No. 4: Running Back Roger Craig

Before Frank Gore, the 49ers’ greatest running back was standout Roger Craig.

Craig, technically a fullback, carried San Francisco’s ground attack during the vast majority of the Niners’ glory years of the 1980s.

San Francisco drafted Craig in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft, and the tailback would find his way to his first Pro Bowl two years later in 1985 — the first of four total selections. Craig would also be named All-Pro in 1988 and wound up receiving three Super Bowl rings during his 49ers tenure.

Unfortunately, one of Craig’s final moments came in the 1991 NFC Championship game versus the New York Giants. Fans can still recall Craig’s costly fumble, which set up the Giants’ game-winning field goal and a trip to the Super Bowl that season.

Craig signed with the Oakland Raiders in 1991 and played his last two years with the Minnesota Vikings before retiring following the 1993 season.
