No. 2: Defensive Tackle Sheldon Day

Somewhat forgotten amid the very deep San Francisco defensive line, third-year pro defensive tackle Sheldon Day has quietly put together a nice training camp.

Fans may recall Day was picked up off the Jacksonville Jaguars’ scrap heap, claimed by the 49ers off waivers on Nov. 20 of last year. Considering the Jags operate a nearly identical defense as do Robert Saleh’s Niners, it was a seamless transition for Day.

Over his six games in San Francisco, Day managed 12 tackles and a sack.

Efforts like those have carried over into training camp too. He’s been one of the regular contributors on the Niners’ second-string unit — the spot he’ll likely be when Week 1 commences.

Here’s what NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco had to say about Day’s efforts Friday:

"Nose tackle tackle Sheldon Day had an impressive day, giving the 49ers’ offensive line fits and seemingly living in the offensive backfield. Day threw running back Matt Breida for a 5-yard loss on one play, then recorded a sack of C.J. Beathard on the next snap."

Day’s versatility to play multiple spots along the D-line also helps to increase his value in the regular season. But Day is doing more than just showcasing his flexibility.

D-line depth and rotations are key in today’s pass-happy NFL. So it’s good to see Day thriving in his second season in San Francisco.
