No. 8: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo Continues the Deep-Ball Work
San Francisco 49ers
Deep passing has never been part of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s stronger skill set. Earlier this offseason, Pro Football Focus broke down how this aspect of his game was, perhaps, the biggest weakness the otherwise budding signal-caller possesses in his repertoire.
After missing Marquise Goodwin on two deep passes in 11-on-11 drills last Saturday, Garoppolo and Goodwin got together to work on some of these aspects once practice finished.
It paid off. Garoppolo managed to connect with Goodwin during Sunday’s session.
Staying after practice and working on the deep ball has been something Garoppolo continued into Week 2. During Thursday’s session, Garoppolo held a number of other receivers after practice to continue working on deep routes.
Considering some of the speed the Niners possess on offense, particularly deep threats like Goodwin, it only makes sense for Garoppolo and Co. to hammer out the kinks at this point rather than waiting for the regular season to iron it out.
